Kate was delighted. ‘You know John Donne – “The Sunne Rising”. I read his poems as a young girl – my Aunt Alice disapproved. She thought them too erotic, only for the unchaste…’

‘The poet tells the sun to go away because he wishes to stay in bed with the woman he loves…’ Raife said. ‘But your clothes will be dry now. And you must go back.’

‘I must,’ Kate said, suddenly sad. ‘I must pretend to be the wife of Thomas Fanshawe again.’

‘We will find a way to be together.’ Raife kissed her fingertips. ‘Come to me soon. Meanwhile, I must give some thought to your life as a highwayman…’ His eyes glowed. ‘We will talk of it when we next meet. I cannot have you put your life in danger.’

‘You cannot?’ Kate pulled back. ‘I have never bent to the will of any man. I do not intend now to be told that I may not…’

‘I meant no offence, my love.’ Raife kissed her. When he tugged away, he said, ‘I think only to talk with you when we meet next about how our future might be. Perhaps there is a way we can be together, for all time.’

Kate reached for his hands. ‘If only there could be…’

His lips brushed her neck. ‘I will make you some food, and then we must ride post-haste to The Cell before someone raises an alarm… I met your good servant John when I brought Midnight. He is ever concerned for you.’

‘His hearing is not good…’ Kate suppressed a smile. ‘He thinks you are called Ralph Chaplin.’

‘Then Ralph Chaplin I must be,’ Raife said. He took her hand. ‘Come, rise. The sun is almost up and we must be gone, until next time.’
